Google unveils Nexus One smartphone
Google on Tuesday unveiled the Nexus One, the online giant’s leap into the smartphone market.

At a 1 p.m. ET event, the company presented the phone.

“Nexus One is where Web meets phone,” said Google’s Mario Queiroz.

The announcement puts Google, which before relied on other companies to make the phones that ran its Android operating system, head-to-head with the darling of the market, Apple’s iPhone.

The Samsung Blue Earth is a touch-screen phone with a solar panel charger located on its back. Its design symbolizes a flat, rounded pebble. Made from recycled plastic that is extracted from water bottles, Blue Earth helps to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the manufacturing process. The handset and charger are also free from harmful substances. The packaging is also made from recycled paper. A 5 star energy efficient charger uses standby power lower than 0.03W. Consumers can set Blue Earth to ‘Eco Mode,’ reducing the screen’s brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth to an energy-efficient mode. In ‘Eco Walk,’ users can count their steps with an in-built pedometer, even calculating how much CO2 emissions have been reduced by walking as opposed to motor transport.

With Nokia’s Ovi Contacts, consumers can view which friends are online, chat and see what music they’re listening to. Bundled with Nokia’s ‘Comes with Music’ service, users can download unlimited music to the 5730 and a single computer for free. The music can be kept after the yearly contract has expired.
